Saving Our Community Chisholm
The Montgomery Unified Prevention System (Coalition), through its facilitating agency, the Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD, received a Unified Prevention System (UPS) grant in 2005, through the State Incentive Grant (SIG) awarded to the State of Alabama by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Substance abuse prevention strategies were used, including a system change strategy in the three year project. The program was evaluated by the Drs. Halpin from Auburn University. The outcome showed significant statistical differences and COSA-NCADD has continued the substance abuse prevention and the Karate program for students in Chisholm Elementary School. Grades are up, school attendance is up and discipline problems are down. In addition, COSA-NCADD hosts Chisholm's Family Fun Day" Health Fair in May.
